Compare EPS coating and hardcoat systems

Coating systems help match EPS moulds and profiles to the strength, finish and number of uses required by the project.

The staging source compares plywood, polyurethane and fiberglass-based systems across finish quality, time, durability, drawbacks and cost.

Comparison Table

Coating system options

Curved negative mould pattern cut into EPS

Class 2 finish

L100 - Plywood

Plywood with resin finish laminated onto foam. Strong and familiar, with good time and durability, but limited to straight edges.

Close view of a curved EPS profile detail

Joint support

L100h - Plywood with PU Resin

Similar to L100 with PU glue-bonded joints. Useful for angled plane-to-plane joints, though sanding and sizing need care.

Circular custom EPS profile or feature mould

Sprayed coating

L200 - Polyurethane Coating

Sprayed polyurethane coating with sanding. Practical for industrial use where finish is less critical and strength is required.

Feature moulds made from expanded polystyrene foam

Higher finish

L250HF - Polyurethane with extra sanding

A more prepared polyurethane coating path with additional coats, sanding and final quality control for a better finish.

Custom profile cut EPS foam shapes

Premium system

L500MX - Fiberglass composition

A stronger proprietary fiberglass and epoxy-based option that requires more preparation and finishing time.
